I really had only one goal in reworking the Galley, take advantage of a lot of wasted space. As with many things project creep entered and I decided to add a freezer.
This is the original galley
This area held 3 very small drawers, too short to even stow a bread knife. There was roughly 1.5 cubic feet of storage.
That same space reworked to hold three drawers and a small compartment under them. The drawers alone will be nearly 3 cubic feet, doubling the storage. The compartment under the drawers will add another cubic foot of storage.
The new drawer (bottom) is twice the length of the original
The freezer box is made of marine plywood covered in fiberglass and epoxy
The freezer box primed
And painted
The bottom, side toward the hull, and top are insulated with Aerogel Spaceloft. It has an R-value of just over 10 per inch. So three inches of it was better than four inches of foam. I went with Spaceloft because if the box was two inches shallower I would not be able to fit the evaporator plate in it.
The insulation leaves a fine white powder everywhere. I did my best to seal it up.
Freezer in place
The new counter top dry fit
Gluing the counter in place
This is the current state of things. The counter is in, faucet installed, and fiddles installed. I hope to finish soon
I was struggling with what to do fo a salon table. I did not like the original centerline table. With such a small salon I wanted somthing that could get out of the way. I’ve seen many boats similar size to ours with bulkhead maounted tables. I gave some thought to that but I like being able to go forward from either side. My wife said to me, half joking, why not just have it disappear into the floor. That idea crossed all my boxes and had the added advantage of being able to be set at a coffee table height. It makes it nice to be able to sit back and kick your feet up.
